Sturgeon Lake is “Y” shaped located in the Kawarthas just north of Peterborough. It’s believed its name comes from the Sturgeon Cree of Nipigon. The area has history in the fur trade and mining. The lake is approximately 25 km from the southern to the north-eastern extremes, the longer axis, is 3 km wide with maximum depths of about 11 metres. The Trent-Severn Waterway flows into Sturgeon Lake through the locks at Fenelon Falls, a thriving vacation community, with the larger town of Lindsay at the southern end of Sturgeon Lake and Bobcageon to the east. People enjoy summertime watersports and fishing on the lake, and the nearby Ken Reid Conservation Area is popular with nature lovers year-round.
